Counterfeit Lows in Omaha Hi-Lo

Suppose your hole cards include A-2 and the flop contains 3-4-8. You have a powerful low draw. If an ace or deuce appears later, one of your key low ranks is duplicated on the board and you may need a different hole-card combination or backup low card.

A-2-3-x type structures can be more robust than bare A-2 because the extra low rank gives you another way to construct a strong low when the board pairs one of your primary low cards.

Before committing heavily, ask whether your low is the nuts, whether it can be counterfeited, and whether your hand also has meaningful high potential.

Does counterfeiting always kill my low?

No. It may simply weaken it if you have a usable backup low card.

What hands resist counterfeiting?

Hands containing multiple connected low ranks, especially ace-deuce plus another low card, are generally more resilient.

Can a board pair help my high while hurting my low?

Yes. Omaha Hi-Lo requires evaluating the high and low sides separately.

Suppose you hold A-2-5-K and the flop is 3-4-8. Your current low possibilities are excellent. If the turn is an ace, the board now duplicates one of your key ranks. You cannot simply count A-2-3-4-8 using both aces; you must still form five unpaired ranks, so the 5 may become an important backup card.

That is why A-2-3-x or A-2-4-x structures often have better low resilience than bare A-2 with two irrelevant cards.
